(Malayala Manorama Kochi dt 30-7-2015)Train services to Willingdon Island soon
The Railway Board has approved the project of introducing local train services to Cochin harbour terminus station (Willingdon Island) and Ernakulam railway goods (ERG) station.
Prof K V Thomas MP said the approval has been officially sent to the Thiruvananthapuram divisional railway manager Sunil Bajpai. “During the inauguration of local area service in Ernakulam, railway minister Suresh Prabhu had announced that the service will be extended to CHTS and ERG. Now, the announcement has come in order form. The railway board has directed to revive the CHTS first and then the ERG. Reviving the CHTS is easier since the tracks are in place and would require renovating only the station premises,“ Thomas said.
TOI was the first to report about restarting the services.
Extending service to ERG will take more time as Railways has to relay the railway tracks.Meanwhile, railway sources said they have already started official procedures to start the revival project. “We had started working on the project ever since the railway minister announced the same. A detailed study report has already been prepared and we are preparing the estimate and viability study reports,“ an officer said.
Once the CHTS is ready for operation, a diesel electric multiple unit rakes will replace the mainline electric multiple unit since the route to CHTS is not electrified.
