Local trains feel the rush as Demu goes for repair

Regular commuters, who take passenger trains connecting Ernakulam and nearby districts, are having a tough time as many local trains are running without three to four coaches on a daily basis.
“They have reduced coaches for the past two weeks without any prior warning. Since school examinations were going on till March end, the impact was not felt. But, now that the schools have closed down, the vacation rush has begun. All seats are fully occupied from the point of origin itself,“ said Latheef Rahim, an Angamaly resident.
According to railway authorities, the coaches of Ernakulam local area Demu service have been taken to Chennai for maintenance. They are operating a passenger train in place of Demu with coaches taken from other local trains. “Once the rake is back from Chennai, the issue will be solved,“ said a railway source. However, authorities are clueless about when the rake would return for service.
The Demu rake is usually taken to Kollam or Palakkad for weekly maintenance. But for major or annual maintenance works, rakes are taken to Chennai, he added.
“For the replacement train, the railways took two to three coaches from other passenger trains, resulting in the heavy rush. Authorities should take steps to carry out Demu repair works in Kollam and Palakkad,“ said P Krishnakumar, general secretary , Thrissur railway passengers' association (TRPA).
