Restrictions on UTS

Curbs on unreserved ticket draws flak

The railway's decision to restrict the time taken to travel on unreserved tickets (up to 200km) within three hours of buying the ticket from March 1 has drawn flak from passengers.
According to the railway board, one should start the journey from the station within three hours of buying the ticket or up to the departure of the first train to the destination, whichever is first.
The other decisions by the board -to issue tickets for a distance of up to 199 km from the originating station and to withdraw the facility to issue return tickets from the same station -have also come under fire. “Both these decisions have come as a shocker.Currently, passengers travelling in unreserved class within 200 km are allowed to buy tickets at any point of the day (midnight to midnight) and board the train of his or her choice.Passengers who have to travel during rush hours usually purchase the tickets early.
Now, they are forced to travel within three hours of buying the ticket. The return ticket facility has also been withdrawn. A person who wants to travel from Thrissur to Ernakulam for shopping or to Guruvayur for a temple visit cannot purchase his/her return ticket. He/she will have to stand in a long queue,“ said P Krishnakumar, general secretary, Thrissur railway passengers' association.
The decision that passengers can only buy tickets from the originating station for a distance up to 199 km would put an end to the cluster ticketing system. At present, passengers can purchase ticket from any station to any station under a cluster. For instance, a person who wants to travel to Kollam from Ernakulam Junction can purchase ticket from Ernakulam Town, Edappally, Kalamassery or Tripunithura and board the train from Ernakulam Junction. This facility will also be withdrawn from March 1.
“At a time when railways is introducing technological up-gradations, such decisions are reactionary. These decisions, particularly related to cluster ticketing facility, will only increase rush at major stations. We demand the railways to revise the decisions,“ said R D Manikandan, convener, Edappally railway passengers' association.
